SUMMARY:Coalition SPEAKER SERIES: "Pastrami on Rye: An Overstuffed History
of the Jewish Deli\," Ted Merwin Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:"Pastrami on Rye" is the first full-length history of the New Y
ork Jewish deli. &nbsp\;The deli\, argues Ted Merwin\, reached its full fl
owering not in the immigrant period as some might assume\, but in the inte
rwar era\, when the children of Jewish immigrants celebrated the first flu
sh of their success in American by downing sandwiches and cheesecake in th
eater district delis. &nbsp\;Richly research and compelling tole\, "Pastra
mi on Rye" gives us the surprising story of a quintessential New York Inst
itution.\n\nTed Merwin is a journalist\, scholar\, author of numerous book
s and public speaker. His book "Pastrami on Rye" won the National Jewish B
ook Award\, Jewish education and identity. He attended Amherst College and
Williams College at Oxford University.\n\nJoin us for what is sure to be
another amazing speaker session!\n\nWith gratitude to our generous sponsor
s Gloria and Marty Greenstein and the Rene Bloch Foundation.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\
n\n\n\nFROM THE DESK OF TED\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA curated section where I sha
re my thoughts on Jewish culture\, life\, pop culture\, memorabilia\, and
everything in between. Join me as I dive deep into the vibrant tapestry of
Jewish identity\, exploring its timeless traditions and their connection
 to contemporary society.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow Katz’s Del
icatessen became a New York icon\n\nWhen I was growing up on Long Island i
n the 1970s\, school field trips meant being schlepped on a bus to the McG
raw-Hill building on Sixth Avenue\, to a multimedia film called the “New
York Experience\,” in which a kaleidoscopic montage of New Yorkers of d
ifferent stripes celebrated both past and present life in Gotham. Nowadays
\, all one needs to do to get a sense of the real New York is to pay a vis
 it to Katz’s Deli on Houston Street\, where a prickly\, pickle-y\, briny
Yiddish gestalt holds imperious sway in a churning sea of multi-racial\,
 multi-ethnic customers and counter people.\n\n\nRead More →\n\nJul 11\,
 2023\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nI’ll have what she’s having\n\nMy maternal grand
parents\, Jean and Lou Kaplan\, did not keep kosher. That was their ancest
ors’ way\, the path of slavish adherence to the stringencies of Jewish l
aw. But old habits die hard\, and they never ate the foods they had not co
nsumed as children. They would sooner have taken off all their clothes and
danced naked in front of their neighbors in Flushing\, Queens\, than down
  ham\, clams\, or even a cheeseburger.\n\n\nRead More →\n\nJul 11\, 2023
 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMy favorite deli/delis of my youth\n\nWhen I give talks
on the history of the Jewish deli\, I’m inevitably asked what my favorit
e deli is. I often sidestep the question for a number of reasons: 1) I’m
an historian\, so the delis that matter the most to me are the legendary
ones from the past\, the ones I’ve only heard stories about\, like Grabs
tein’s and the Hy Tulip in Brooklyn\, Reuben’s and Lindy’s in Manhat
tan\, and Schweller’s in the Bronx. 2) I interviewed a lot of deli owner
s for my book\, and for those who are still around\, I wouldn’t want to
play favorites and offend them if I don’t say they’re the best\; and 3
) I’ve tried to keep kosher for my entire adult life after college--alth
ough I’m a bit more flexible these days--so my experience of eating in n
on-kosher delis is much more limited than of eating in kosher ones.\nI did
grow up going to a few delis that I’m nostalgic about…\n\n\nRead More
