For millennia, Jews and others have faced struggles but ultimately found sources of strength to persevere and flourish. Yet, how have they done so and how can that help us today? Dr. Robert Klitzman, Professor of Psychiatry and Director of Masters of Bioethics Program at Columbia University, draws on his extensive research work with patients and recent book, “Doctor, Will You Pray For Me?” He explores how we might best respond when facing crises and stress. Dr. Klitzman, a renowned author of ten books and 200 academic journal articles, will illuminate how insights from ‘wisdom literature’ in Judaism and other traditions, including Job and books in the Bible can help us. He will also touch on Maimonides’ 12th century classic, A Guide for the Perplexed and more recent writings by Martin Buber. We will learn how these historic teachings can aid us and remind us to focus on what is ultimately important in life! Recent research that he and others have conducted will highlight how reframing problems, focusing on the positive and the present, expressing gratitude and other approaches can assist us, as well.
