Since 1993 Professor Stavans has been on the faculty at Amherst College, where
he is the Lewis-Sebring Professor of Humanities, Latin American and Latino
Culture. He is a Mexican-born Jewish American writer and academic. He writes and
speaks on American, Hispanic and Jewish Cultures. He earned a master’s degree
from the Jewish Theological Seminary and a PhD from Columbia
University.
Best known for his investigation of language and culture, his books include How Yiddish Changed America and How America Changed Yiddish, On Borrowed Words, Spanglish, Dictionary Days, The Disappearance, and A Critic’s Journey. He has edited The Norton Anthology of Latino Literature, the three-volume set Isaac Bashevis Singer: Collected Stories, The Poetry of Pablo Neruda, among dozens of other volumes. He has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship and received wide international acclaim for his work.
