As we look ahead to the holiday of Purim – we will view the film “Live and Become,” which was
released over 20 years ago and is still a fantastic piece of storytelling. It follows the life of an
Ethiopian boy, Shlomo, who is transported to Israel as part of Operation Moses. The boy is an orphan
and is not Jewish. He conceals his identity and is eventually adopted by an Israeli family. Shlomo is
mistrustful at first, but ultimately forms strong bonds with his family, who are indignant at the racism
and xenophobia he faces from some Israelis. But he can never forget his biological mother in Africa
and turns to an Ethiopian spiritual leader in Israel to help him cope with his internal conflict. The film’s
grand sweep follows Shlomo as he grows up, falls in love and serves in the army, but he is plagued
by doubts about himself. His life begs the questions of the Purim story: Who is a Jew and what does it
mean to hide oneself?
