
Jonathan Gribetz is a professor in the Department of Near Eastern Studies and in the
Program in Judaic Studies. He teaches about the history of Zionism, Palestine,
Israel, Jerusalem, and religion and nationalism in the modern Middle East. He
directs the program for the Transregional Study of the Contemporary Middle East,
North Africa, and Central Asia and serves as Editor of the Association for Jewish
Studies journal, the AJS review.
Dr Gribetz’s first book was “Defining Neighbors: Religion, Race and the Early Zionist Arab Encounter.” His most recent book, “Reading Herzl in Beirut: The PLO Effort to Know the Enemy” analyzes the history of the Palestine Liberation Research
Center and its studies of Jews, Judaism, Zionism, and Israel.
Our speaker received a Fulbright scholarship and two grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities to support his work and the book was awarded the 2024 National Jewish Book Award in History.
